The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Breed
The name of this breed originates from 17th Century King Charles II of England, who was extremely fond of toy spaniels. “Cavalier” originates from the title given to the Royalist supporters of King Charles I and King Charles II during the English Civil Wars.
Cavaliers are one of the most affectionate dog breeds. This small, charming dog has the most gentle demeanor and, therefore, is great with children and disabled/special needs people. Cavaliers are physically adorable with their soft, silky coats; large, round, dark brown expressive eyes (“melting” expression); long, silky, feathered ears; fuzzy bedroom slipper feet (“Grinch” feet); and constantly wagging, long, plumed tails. But even better than their charming appearance, Cavaliers have the most loving dispositions and are devoted to their “people.” They are sensitive and easy-going dogs, great companions, and cuddly lap dogs (“Spaniel comforters”). They are affectionately known as “Velcro” dogs. For that reason, Cavaliers are rated as excellent therapy and emotional support dogs for people suffering from depression, anxiety or other conditions. Because they were bred specifically for companionship, Cavaliers require plenty of attention and human interaction and thrive on human connection; they are NOT a good fit for a family who is never home. Cavaliers should not be left alone for long periods of time. In fact, some believe two dogs are better than one to avoid separation anxiety.
Although the AKC classifies Cavaliers in the “Toy Group,” they are the largest in that group. Their average weight ranges between 13-18 pounds (although it is not uncommon to see larger ones), and they stand approximately 12-13 inches from the ground to their shoulders. Their lifespan is between 12-15 years, but this will depend upon if and when they develop mitral valve disease, which is common in the breed.
Cavaliers come in 4 main color combinations: Blenheim (chestnut red & white), Tricolor, Black & Tan, and Ruby. There is also the more rare chocolate Cavalier.
